At Vein Specialists of Tennessee, we take advantage of the latest advances in technology to give our patients better, more effective treatments that are faster and less invasive. One of the most powerful tools we use is ultrasound.
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to give us images of the vein structure of the leg. It’s painless and fast. You’re probably already familiar with ultrasound because of its use in allowing parents to see their unborn child still in the womb. The detail that ultrasound can provide is amazing (you’ve seen the images that show the expressions on the childrens’ faces). That same detail gives us the ability to treat varicose veins more effectively.
With ultrasound, Dr. Tarr can use the proven effectiveness of sclerotherapy to full advantage. Sclerotherapy has been used since the 1800s. A very fine needle is used to inject the abnormal vein with a sclerosing solution. This irritates the inner lining of the vein, causing it to collapse. The body then naturally re-routes circulation to a healthy vein, eliminating the unsightly varicose and spider veins.
veins on the surface of the leg are easily seen by the physician and treated with traditional sclerotherapy. But often, vein damage goes deeper, and that’s where Dr. Tarr uses ultrasound to provide a full evaluation of the patient’s vein structure, and to pinpoint areas where sclerotherapy can treat deeper conditions and eliminate other vein problems.
This can mean fewer office visits and faster, more effective treatment for each patient.
Ultrasound also allows Dr. Tarr to determine if other vein treatments may be more effective, such as endovenous ablation or ambulatory phelebectomy. It is a powerful tool for determining the patient’s overall vein health.
